Ferry is the pole vault coach at U. of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Like other American coaches and athletes, he has been distressed by the decline in American pole vaulting in the last two decades. Ferry proposes to do something about it. It is obvious that the best vaulters in the world these days come from former Soviet Union countries: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, etc. Ferry describes the technique innovations used by these "Russian" athletes and shows how American vaulters can incorporate these advances into their own vaulting styles. All phases of the vault are analyzed, and Ferry goes on to discuss pole selection and safety, the components of training, and a year-round training program. This is a book American vaulters and coaches have been waiting for. Clear, concise, and well illustrated.
